460km Harare-Beitbridge Road complete

ALMOST 460 kilometres have been opened to traffic on the Beitbridge-Masvingo-Harare Highway, while about 120 kilometres remain outstanding, as the Government expeditiously moves to rehabilitate major trunk roads across the country.

The Beitbridge-Masvingo-Harare Highway is among the five major roads currently under rehabilitation. The other four are the Harare-Chirundu, Bulawayo-Victoria Falls, Bulawayo-Beitbridge and Harare-Kanyemba roads.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail recently, then-Transport and Infrastructural Development Permanent Secrerary, Engineer Theodius Chinyanga, said 458km had been rehabilitated under the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway.

“Beitbridge-Masvingo-Harare has opened to traffic a total of 458,02 kilometres. The balance to date is 121,98 kilometres,” Eng Chinyanga said.

“On the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls section, 6,9 kilometres opened to traffic, while on the Bulawayo-Beitbridge section 5,14 kilometres have been opened to traffic.

“Harare-Kanyemba Road has 10km completed and opened to traffic.

There is ongoing progress on 15km (10km on base two and 5km on subgrade), while another active section, which is from Mahuwe to Mushumbi, has 30km.”

He said the Harare-Chirundu project will commence soon, as the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion is reviewing the funding term sheets.

Eng Chinyanga said significant work had been done on roads nationwide under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme.
