About 5 000 people in Kuwadzana, Harare, over the weekend received rice under a charitable initiative by former legislator Mrs Betty Nhambu Kaseke.
Each person took home 10kg of rice.
Mrs Kaseke is the patron of an organisation called Kuwadzana Development Association, which was formed in 2013 to assist residents of the high-density suburb. Vulnerable groups such as orphans, old people and churches have been benefiting since its inception.
In an interview on Tuesday, Mrs Kaseke said her mandate was to spearhead developmental projects in the area and they had engaged the Government in such projects.
“We recently received 28 tonnes of rice from the Government and then distributed it to over 5 600 families or households regardless of their political affiliation,” she said.
“This was after there was an outcry of hunger when our listening President (Mnangagwa) and Defence and War Veterans Welfare Deputy Minister and secretary-general of the War Veterans Association, (Cde) Victor Matemadanda, recently visited Kuwadzana.
“The distribution went on very well and during the process, several people started flocking in and we got overwhelmed. That resulted in some going back home empty- handed, which showed that people were in dire need of food.
Mrs Kaseke assured the residents of more food and developmental projects.
“We have also done a lot of other projects, which include road construction, bridge construction, borehole drilling, among others,” she said.
