5 killed as Munenzva bus crashes in South Africa

The incident occurred at around 1:30pm in the Hammanskraal area, 40 km out of Pretoria. Reports from South Africa indicated that the Harare-bound bus which was towing a trailer had 46 passengers including the bus crew. The bus burst a front tyre near a flyover along the N1 Highway in Pretoria and the driver lost control. The trailer reportedly hit a pole and the bus overturned killing five people on the spot.

The driver was seriously injured after being trapped under the bus. He is reportedly battling for his life at Steve Biko Memorial Hospital. The deceased, among them an assistant driver, were taken to Garankuwa Government Hospital mortuary in Pretoria while the injured were taken to Steve Biko Memorial and Jubilee hospitals.

Twenty other passengers, who suffered minor injuries, were treated and discharged.
Officials at the Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa are assisting the families and relatives of the victims to repatriate the bodies. The N1 Highway, which links South Africa to the rest of the continent, is one of the busiest roads in that country.
