About 550km of the 580km Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road have been rehabilitated, with only 31,9 km left and anticipated to be completed this year.
The rehabilitation of the Harare-Beitbridge Highway and modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post to bring in efficient systems aimed at reducing or eliminating delays are two of the signature projects of President Mnangagwa’s administration.
Beitbridge Border Post has already been commissioned by the President and users of arguably the busiest land border in the SADC region commended the speed with which they were being cleared and the ease of clearance over the festive period.
Five local companies were contracted to undertake the rehabilitation of the highway and they are Tensor Systems, Masimba Holdings, Fossil Contracting, Exodus & Company and Bitumen World.
The scope of the project involves dualisation, upgrading and tolling of the highway. The entire north-south corridor has been divided into three sections: the 580 km Harare-Beitbridge Highway together with eight toll plazas, the 342 km Harare-Chirundu Highway with six toll plazas, and the 59 km Harare Ring Road with three toll plazas. These tolls are what pay for the rehabilitation and maintenance of the road.
In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the development.
“Harare Masvingo Beitbridge Road rehabilitation and upgrading project progress as of July 14, 2026, a 3km stretch was completed and opened to traffic, bringing the total to 550,1 km completed and opened to traffic. Only 31.9km remaining to complete the project,” reads the statement.
The five contractors- Bitumen World has completed 130.3km, Fossil Contracting (122.6km), Masimba Holdings (102km), Exodus and Co (98km), Tensor System (90km) while the Trial section is at 7.2km.
This development also comes after the construction of another bridge, Chimusana Bridge, a Trumpet Interchange and an urban bypass, which are all near the recently commissioned Mucheke River Bridge, is still underway in Masvingo, with some of the works almost complete.
The project, located in Masvingo Urban, near Mucheke River Bridge and the Masvingo Polytechnic College, is designed as a grade-separation structure to allow traffic travelling to Beitbridge to bypass the Masvingo Central Business District (CBD).
Construction of the Masvingo Trumpet Interchange is progressing rapidly as part of the final stages of the Harare-Beitbridge Highway upgrade.
It is part of the broader North-South Corridor improvement. This interchange is designed to reduce congestion at critical, high-volume intersections in Masvingo, minimise accidents and enhance travel efficiency for long-distance drivers.
The project is part of the modernisation initiatives involving contractors, Masimba Holdings and Fossil Contracting.
