THE launch of 5G services countywide by state owned enterprise NetOne is set to open doors for innovation and should be fully utilised, NetOne chief executive officer Engineer Raphael Mushanawani has said.

He made the remarks at the official launch of the company’s 5G services, an event that coincided with the commissioning of Potraz tower relocated base stations and was graced by Vice President Kembo Mohadi in Harare on Wednesday.

Addressing thousands of members of the public who had gathered to witness the milestone achievement in tapping more to the growth of the ICT sector, Eng Mushanawani said the technological leap reflects the Second Republic’s forward-thinking leadership and commitment to advancing the nation and region into the future.

“Today, we officially join the global digital elite with the full operation of 20 NetOne 5G base stations across key areas in Zimbabwe. From here in Harare to Bulawayo, from our universities to Parliament, and even in our airports, Zimbabwe is now poised to experience connectivity like never before. We are ensuring that our urban and rural areas are linked through this powerful high speed data network, creating new opportunities for everyone.

“The activation of the 5G services open doors to innovation that will shape every sector of our economy. Farmers will be adopting smart technologies that optimise food production, while conserving water and energy. Industries and service providers will be revolutionised by automation and efficiency, education transformed through digital classrooms, and cities becoming smart hubs that serve citizens more effectively,” said Eng Mushanawani.

He said the extensive high speed data network they’ve built doesn’t stop with 5G technologies.

“275 LTE base stations were deployed under the National Mobile Broadband Phase 3 program which was launched on the 20th of September 2021 by His Excellency Cde Dr E.D Mnangagwa where we promised the delivery of 5G Service. And, with 140 solar-powered sites, we are bringing connectivity to remote areas, reducing carbon emissions, and leading the way in sustainable development.

“Our efforts in rolling out 5G technologies are not merely about faster internet speeds. This network represents the foundation of Zimbabwe’s emerging digital economy. It is about ensuring our businesses are globally competitive, that our OneConnect solutions empowers sectors including construction, transportation, mining, and beyond to excel in a rapidly evolving global market. This is about innovation that drives economic growth, fosters entrepreneurship, and creates sustainable employment opportunities for our people,” he said.

Eng Mushanawani said in the education sector there are closing the digital divide by providing ICT resources to rural and marginalised schools.

“We are ensuring that every Zimbabwean child, regardless of their location, has the tools to thrive in a modern, digital world. This is how we build a future-ready workforce and secure Zimbabwe’s place as a leader on the global stage. Through NetOne’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, we are delivering real impact to communities.

“We are installing solar-powered boreholes, creating nutritional gardens, and supporting poverty alleviation programmes. This is about more than connectivity – it’s about uplifting lives and addressing the challenges our people face. As we celebrate today’s launch, we also reaffirm our dedication to sustainability and inclusivity. We are building a future where technology serves everyone, ensuring no community is left behind,” said Eng Mushanawani.
