OVER 60 athletes from around the country took part in the Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) selection meet for the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games (AUSC) team at White City Stadium.
Team Zimbabwe will send 16 girls and 16 boys to the Games that will be hosted by Lesotho in December.
Bab chairperson Watson Madanyika felt the selection event was a success, as clubs such as Kutama College from Mashonaland West, Plumtree High, Kip Keino from Matabeleland South, Mpopoma High and other schools entered their athletes.
“Looking at the results, our athletes still require more competitions for them to improve their times and distances. From Bulawayo we have Denzil Siasimulela, who posted 21.32 seconds in the 200m and 10.48 seconds in 100m. The boy performed quite well, but there is room for improvement. It’s now up to the selectors to choose who qualifies for the AUSC Region 5 Games. I would like to thank the SRC for allowing us to stage this event,” said Madanyika.
The Youth Games were postponed last year following the outbreak of Covid-19.
The decision to postpone the Games by 12 months was taken by the Ausc Region 5 Ministers’ Troika in July last year after a surge in Covid-19 cases around the region. — @innocentskizoe
