HARARE regional magistrate Mr Collet Ncube yesterday denied bail for 66 CCC activists who were arrested in June for allegedly participating in an unlawful gathering.
The development comes after the suspects, including CCC administrator Jameson Timba, had applied for bail under changed circumstances.
Magistrate Ncube noted that nothing had changed in their circumstances for bail, adding they have the propensity to commit public violence if granted bail.
The State proceeded with trial continuation on charges of unlawful gathering, after the ruling.
Timba and 77 others were recently acquitted of disorderly conduct.
Recently, the same magistrate acquitted 12 of their colleagues for disorderly conduct and unlawful gathering.
Appearing for the State is Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti. Prosecution is alleging that on June 16 at around 2pm, police received information that there was an unsanctioned gathering at Timba’s house in Harare.
It is alleged that the purpose of the meeting was to plan and stage unlawful demonstrations in Harare.
Police went to the house where they heard a lot of noise and later saw a large gathering.
Reinforcements were called in when the suspects behaved in a riotous way by throwing stones at a police vehicle that was slightly damaged in the process. Police had to use tear smoke to control the crowd and arrested the suspects.
