SEVEN people were injured after an unregistered commuter omnibus they were travelling in overturned and landed on its roof along Luveve Road in Bulawayo on Monday night.

Bulawayo’s Chief Fire Officer Mr Richard Peterson confirmed the accident that occurred at around 8 PM near “Magetsini”.

“I can confirm that there was an accident involving an unregistered commuter omnibus. It was carrying 18 passengers from the central business district (CBD) to Luveve suburb. The vehicle is suspected to have developed a suspension defect, which resulted in the driver losing control and the vehicle overturned, landing on its roof in the middle of the road,” he said.

Mr Peterson said the injured, six females and a male, were taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment. He said the driver of the kombi fled from the scene immediately after the accident.

“Seven passengers sustained varying injuries. They were conveyed to Mpilo for further management. The driver fled the scene most probably because the vehicle was not registered and he possibly didn’t have a driver’s licence,” he said.

Mr Peterson said the kombi was extensively damaged.

Last Thursday three people, two of them police officers, sustained serious injuries after a police truck they were travelling in side-swiped a Mazda pickup truck along Khami Road, also in Bulawayo.

Human error, defective vehicles, bad state of the roads, speeding, drunken driving, fatigue, use of cellphones while driving and going through red robots are some of the major causes of accidents on the country’s roads.
