74 ZANU PF councillors uncontested

SEVENTY-FOUR ZANU PF aspiring councillors are uncontested after opposition political parties failed to field candidates in many wards across the country, Political Commissar Dr Mike Bimha has said.

This means the ruling party has already won 74 local council seats subject to confirmation by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Speaking during the launch of ZANU PF’s election campaign at Mutema Secondary School in Chipinge yesterday, Dr Bimha said the number of uncontested seats in local government have risen to 74 from 53, after further verification.

“Your Excellency, I am pleased to tell you that we successfully filed nomination papers for all our candidates,” he said.

“And the total number of candidates is 2 743, all nominated without any issues to show that we are a highly organised party.

“In local government, we have already won 74 seats, as we are uncontested in these wards.

“There are 633 female candidates to fulfil the requirement of 30 percent to be councillors.”

Dr Bimha said candidates are already on the ground, campaigning for the party.

“A majority of these candidates are here with us today, and they are ready to go and start work as soon as they leave this place,” he said.
