EIGHT people died, while 21 others were injured when two commuter omnibuses they were travelling in were involved in separate accidents in the Midlands province this week.National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday said in one of the accidents, seven people died, while 11 passengers were injured when a Toyota Hiace had a head-on collision with a Chevrolet near the 110 km along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road in Zvishavane on Monday morning. “The kombi had 15 people on board, while the private vehicle had two people, that is a mother and her three-year-old child,” he said.
It is believed that the Chevrolet encroached into the oncoming vehicles’ lane, resulting with the head-on collision.
Three passengers and the driver died on the spot, while another passenger died on admission at Zvishavane District Hospital.
The 25-year-old woman and her child in the Chevrolet also died on the spot, while the 11 injured passengers were also taken to the hospital for treatment.
In the other accident, one person died while 10 others were injured when a Toyota Quantum they were traveling in veered off the road, hit a bridge and overturned in Gweru early yesterday morning.
The incident occurred near the 28km peg along the Gweru-Bulawayo Road at around 5am. Chief Supt Nyathi said the vehicle which was being driven by Gabriel Murindagomo (32) had 13 passengers on board. He said names of the deceased would be released once their next of kin would have been informed.
