EIGHT districts in urban areas have so far received cash transfers as the Government fulfils its commitment to cushion all vulnerable people from the effects of the El Nino-induced drought.

This comes after the Government released ZiG 154 million for cash transfers to 1,7 million beneficiaries who will each get US$10 per month until March 2025.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Mr Simon Masanga, said they had started paying people in Harare, Mazowe, Mt Darwin, Shurugwi, Kariba, Kadoma, Gwanda and Chinhoyi.

He said the process was ongoing and would cascade to other urban areas.

“We have started paying the beneficiaries in the above areas so figures are changing after every minute. The process is going on well in the urban areas.

“All registered beneficiaries will receive their money so that they purchase mealie-meal for their families,” Mr Masanga said.

Zimbabweans have welcomed the initiative, saying it will go a long way in alleviating hunger and sustaining families.

Mrs Egfa Mudzengi of Warren Park 1 suburb said Government’s commitment to alleviating poverty in urban areas was greatly appreciated and urged all beneficiaries to use their funds responsibly.

“We are very grateful to our Government which is showing commitment to its people. People should not divert funds that are meant to benefit their families.

“We do not want situations where people abuse the funds. The funds are meant to purchase mealie meal in order to sustain our families.

“We are happy that the Government has recognised that there are some people who live in urban areas who are vulnerable,” she said.

Mr Tendai Mhaka said there was need to ensure that all beneficiaries were deserving cases.

“We have people who survive on handouts from others and those who are unemployed. These should get first priority under the programme,” he said.

Mr Joshat Mubaiwa of Dzivaresekwa Extension said beneficiaries of the scheme should be grateful to the Government for its commitment to saving them and their families.

“It is good to be grateful when you receive support. People should be responsible and sustain their families in the face of drought.

“Not everyone will benefit but those who got the opportunity to be part of the programme should save their families from hunger,” he said.
