EIGHTY people have drowned countrywide so far this year, police said yesterday. Of the 80, the police Sub-Aqua Unit managed to retrieve 78 bodies. Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the cases were recorded between January and August. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern recent cases of drowning in stagnant or flowing water occurring around the country.
“Statistics gathered indicate that the ZRP’s Sub-Aqua section attended 80 cases of drowning and managed to retrieve 78 bodies for period between January and August 2015,” she said. Snr Asst Comm Charamba said it was disheartening to note that some of the cases could have been avoided if precautionary measures were taken.
“The police are urging the public, especially children not to play in or near water bodies. “People should not attempt to cross flooded rivers as they risk being swept away. More so, parents should ensure that all water reservoirs are secured at all times,” she said.
Last month two teenagers drowned in a dam at Sodbury Farm in Inkomo while following a duck. Police are attending to an average four cases of drowning weekly.
