POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested nine suspects and recovered 50 kilogrammes of copper cables stolen from various areas.
Police spokesperson for Bulawayo province, Inspector Abednico Ncube said they managed to arrest the nine with help from the public.
“We are happy with the public’s participation. They are giving us tip offs and that is making it possible for us to put these criminals behind bars. Nine suspects have been arrested so far and most of them are locals from Pumula and Cowdray Park,” he said.
Insp Ncube said criminals often steal copper cables and electrical equipment, saying the crimes have a negative effect on the overall performance of the country’s economy.
“Thefts of copper cables have a negative impact not only to the public but also on the country’s economy as the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (Zesa) has been losing millions of dollars in replacing stolen infrastructure,” he said.
Inspector Ncube appealed to members of the public to give information through the police national complaints desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report physically at their nearest police stations if they suspect any criminal activity.
“I appeal to the members of the public to continue to help us with information and tip offs as they make it easier for us to end the copper cable thieves syndicate. Investigations are still in progress and we will leave no stone unturned as these criminals ought to take account for their actions and face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
