A guide to garden planning

Andrew Mangwarara

IT is important to view your green project as an extension of your home.

Gardens should be designed for enjoyment. They are spaces for socialising and relaxation with family members and friends.

With this in mind, plan a garden that brings you pleasure. Consider your goals for the space. Perhaps you want to attract birds or create a peaceful retreat.

Begin by incorporating natural elements like rocks, logs and stones to create an earthy atmosphere.

Choosing plants suitable for your local climate and soil is essential for a thriving garden. Research on plant varieties that complement your garden’s aesthetics.

Opt for plants that maintain their appearance throughout the year for a consistently pleasing garden.

Create visual interest by combining diverse colours, textures and plant heights. Incorporate foliage in various shades like green and purple. You can also have variegated foliage.

Consider the time commitment required for garden maintenance. Minimise clutter to maximise enjoyment time.

Make use of vertical space with hanging baskets or pots. Train climbing plants on trellises or fences to add height and visual interest.

Also include seating areas for relaxation and socialising, as gardens should be spaces for enjoying quality time with others.

The Adams’ garden in Belvedere, Harare, is a perfect example of simple and low-maintenance space that still offers ample room to relax and enjoy.
