A hearing ear and a seeing eye

GREETINGS beloved nation in the name of Jesus Christ. Proverbs 12:20, “The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.”

The Bible tells us that God made the hearing ear and the seeing ear, it doesn’t tell us He made an ear and an eye. So meaning that you can have an ear that doesn’t hear and an eye that doesn’t see. When we talk about a hearing ear and seeing eye, we are not talking about physical eyes and ears, but the Bible is talking about spiritual eyes and ears. Remember the spiritual is the mother of the physical, so meaning what is in the spiritual realm manifests in the physical realm. These two are important dimensions that a believer must operate in, you cannot have one at the expense of the other. The ability to hear and see spiritually is very important because we will be able to hear God speaking to us and see that which He wants us to see. Many believers are walking blindly through life hoping and guessing that they will make it in life. We cannot live a life of guess work if we are to make it in life and if we are to navigate our way through life. The Bible tells us in Isaiah 30:21, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.” So meaning there is the voice of God that is always willing to guide us along the right path because there are many paths in the world, but it will take us to have that hearing ear to walk along the path that God directs us. Some versions say you shall hear a voice.

There are many voices out there that are always speaking around us, voices of family, friends, social media, news, and the devil and of God. We even have voices speaking within us — fear, shame, regret, guilt, etc. Everything and everyone has a voice and communicates a message. The question is: What voice will we listen to? So as believers we need to hear the right voice, the voice of God as he directs our footsteps. One time Jesus says in John 10:37 ‘my sheep hear my voice… and they follow me’. So meaning if you are a believer you should hear the voice of the master, our lord Jesus in order to follow him. In the bible we come across stories of men and women who were able to see and hear God speaking to them. These stories that we read about are there as patterns for us to follow. In Genesis 22 we read about how Abraham was instructed by God to go and sacrifice his only son Isaac. Abraham heard God clearly give that instruction and he was obedient. In verses 10-12, when he was now on the mountain and was about to kill his son, a voice calls out to him saying, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him”. Abraham had a hearing ear because he heard God telling him to sacrifice his son, and he also heard him telling him not to harm Isaac.

The survival of Isaac depended on the ability of Abraham to hear God at all times. Imagine what would have happened if Abraham had heard the first instruction, but when it came to the second instruction he had disconnected to God and failed to hear the instruction. So meaning it important as believers to be constantly connected to God. We need to train our ears to hear God at all times, otherwise we will miss the things he tells us. Some of us have missed certain seasons in our lives simply because we failed to hear what God was saying to us, or we have been in one place so long simply because we failed to hear God telling us to move. The spirit of God speaks expressly, so we need to train our ears to hear the Holy Spirit. We must not be dull of hearing as believers otherwise we shall miss what God is saying to us as individuals, as families, in our businesses, as ministries and as nations. In 1 Samuel 3, we read about the story about the boy Samuel as he ministered to the Lord under the priest Eli. One night he hears a voice calling him and three times he runs to Eli thinking it was him calling him.

Meanwhile all the time it was God calling him and he had not yet developed a hearing ear. Until Eli realises that it was God calling Samuel and he instructs him to answer God. The Bible tells us in verse 7 that Samuel did not yet know God, so meaning his ears had not yet been trained to hear God. In 2 Kings 6:17 we read about Elisha and his servant and how at one time they were surrounded by an army belonging to the king of Aram. In fear Elisha’s servant cried out to Elisha, “And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.” His servant saw with his physical eyes the army surrounding them, but Elisha prays for his eyes to be opened and he sees the protection that they had from God.

So we need to have a seeing eye, eyes that will see that which God wants to see, eyes that will see into the realm of the spirit. In Jeremiah 1:11-12 the Bible tells us about how Jeremiah is asked by the Lord the following, “The word of the LORD came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?” “I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied. The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching[a] to see that my word is fulfilled.” Jeremiah not only heard God speaking to him, but he was able to see correctly. So meaning it is very possible to see incorrectly in this life. It is possible not to see clearly and to see men as trees just as the man in Mark 8:24. It is also possible to see your destiny helpers as your enemies or to despise them. It is possible not to see your future husband or wife, simply because your physical eyes are looking for something else. Ladies and gentlemen we need to train our ears to hear and our eyes to see, it will not happen automatically. It will take us to seek after God and to wait patiently upon Him until he speaks. It will take us to pray that our spiritual ears and eyes be opened.
