With the 45th Independence Day national celebrations just weeks away, anticipation is building as Zimbabweans prepare to embrace the carnival atmosphere set to unfold in Nembudziya, Gokwe District, Midlands Province.
Under the theme “Devolve and Develop Together Towards Vision 2030”, this year’s commemorations align with the Government’s devolution drive, which rotates national events across various cities, fostering unity and inclusivity.
Among those eager to be part of the celebrations is award-winning Nkayi-based contemporary poet, Imbongi Ntshantshaza (real name Kelvin Tshuma), whose passion for poetry continues to burn brighter with each passing day. The poet envisions himself gracing the Independence Gala stage – an opportunity he believes would propel his career to national prominence.
“Performing at the Independence Gala would be a profound honour and a meaningful experience. It would be a privilege to showcase my artistry on a day that commemorates Zimbabwe’s freedom and independence, filling me with national pride and a deep sense of cultural representation,” he told Chronicle Showbiz.

Born in Bulawayo 33 years ago, Imbongi Ntshantshaza has dedicated his career to uplifting the IsiNdebele language while incorporating English into his poetry, allowing him to reach a broader audience. His performances delve into pressing social issues, Christian themes, and messages of inspiration, education, and empowerment.
Influenced by poetry greats like Nqindi, Albert Nyathi, and South African spoken word legend Mzwakhe Mbuli, Ntshantshaza has refined his craft into a compelling storytelling tool.
His love for poetry is evident in his growing body of work. His album, Insalabeyibabaza, features 10 poetic tracks, including “Kubhejile” and “Ngenela”. His latest projects, “Kubhejile” and “Unchanging Faith” reflect his dedication to storytelling with depth and meaning. “Kubhejile” celebrates individuals who break generational barriers, achieving milestones that redefine their family’s legacy. “Unchanging Faith” draws inspiration from biblical figures like Noah, Lot, Meshach, and Abednego, encouraging steadfast faith amid life’s trials.
Imbongi Ntshantshaza’s contributions to the literary and performing arts landscape have not gone unnoticed. He was previously recognised in the World Population Day Poetry Competition and has performed at numerous prestigious events, including the Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo, wedding ceremonies, birthday celebrations, and farewell events.
Though he cherishes his time performing at Intwasa, he longs for the sense of community that comes with being part of the festival.
Despite this, his aspirations remain high, with the Independence Gala performance sitting at the top of his wishlist.
Beyond poetry, Imbongi Ntshantshaza’s academic and professional background is equally impressive. He holds an Honours Degree in Developmental Studies, a Master’s in Developmental Studies, and a Master’s in Disaster, Risk, and Livelihood Management Studies. By profession, he serves as an HIV programmer, working as a district Aids coordinator for the National Aids Council of Zimbabwe in Nkayi – a role that sees him directly involved in community development and public health advocacy. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
