Accident claims three

Three people died on the spot when a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a truck near Mabvuku turnoff along the Harare-Mutare Road yesterday night. All the three people, including the driver, who were in the VW Polo (registration number ADG 2294) died while the other two who were in the Mercedes Benz Ateco truck escaped unhurt.

The accident occurred at around 7.50pm.
According to eyewitnesses, the VW Polo was heading towards the city while the truck was going towards Ruwa.

The truck driver Mr Faretta Domingo said VW Polo encroached into his lane and it hit the right front wheel of his vehicle.
“I was driving in the inner lane when the vehicle encroached and hit the right front tyre of my truck. The car also had no lights on,” he said.

Mr Barnabas Muranda, who was a passenger in truck, said all the three passengers believed to be in their early 20s died on the spot.
The VW Polo was extensively damaged.

Harare firebrigade and police were later informed and they removed the bodies which were trapped in the vehicle.
By last night, the bodies were still at the scene while police were still recording statements.
