Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has congratulated Sports, Arts, Recreation and Culture Minister Kirsty Coventry on her election as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Minister Coventry becomes the first woman and the first African to lead the prestigious organisation.
In a statement, Dr Chiwenga celebrated Minister Coventry’s remarkable journey to the influential position, emphasising that her election is not just a personal triumph but a source of immense pride for the whole country.
Dr Chiwnga urged Minister Coventry to represent Zimbabwe’s values and aspirations on the global stage.
“The IOC president carries immense responsibilities and I am confident that you will advocate for the development of sports worldwide,” said Acting President Chiwenga.
“Your illustrious career as an Olympian, marked by your dedication and unparalleled achievements, has inspired countless Zimbabweans and athletes worldwide.”
“It was this legacy of success that made it an easy decision for our President, His Excellency Dr Mnangagwa, to appoint you as the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture.
“Your extensive experience and profound knowledge of the sporting world have made a significant impact on our national sports agenda,” he said.
The Acting President said the Government of Zimbabwe stands firmly behind Minister Coventry as she takes on the new role.
