LONDON. — Emmanuel Adebayor has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.
The former Togo international enjoyed a 22-year career playing for some of England’s biggest clubs. He burst onto the scene with Arsenal before going on to play for Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace. Adebayor also had a notable loan spell at Real Madrid, as well as playing in France and Turkey. The at-times controversial but always entertaining striker took to social media to announce his departure from the beautiful game yesterday morning. He told fans: “From the highs to the lows, my career as a professional athlete has been an incredible journey. “Thank you to my fans for being there every step of the way. I am feeling so grateful for everything and I am excited for what is to come.” Adebayor began his professional career at Metz in 2001 before joining Monaco two years later. That earned him a big move to the Gunners in 2006 for a fee of just £3million. The striker impressed for Arsene Wenger’s side in his three-and-a-half season long spell. He netted 62 goals, including a stunning 30-goal campaign in the club’s second season at the Emirates. — The Daily Star
