ONE of the first black advocates in Zimbabwean history, Advocate Lot Senda has died.

He was 92.

Adv Senda died on Friday night at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo after a short illness.

A family representative and grandson Mr Kalani Mjayeli Ndlovu last night confirmed the death of the veteran nationalist.

“I can confirm the death of Advocate Senda. He died last night (Friday) at Mater Dei Hospital after a short illness. Mourners are gathered at Number 1 Duxbury Avenue in Bradfield,” he said.

Mr Ndlovu said burial arrangements were yet to be confirmed.

“We are not yet certain about burial arrangements. We are yet to engage Zanu-PF as you may know he was a former Member of Parliament for Bulawayo South and Deputy Minister of Local Government,” he said.

Adv Senda witnessed the nascent stages of nationalism, its internal intrigues with the crude and repressive racism of white Rhodesia.

Adv Senda worked closely with other nationalists such as the late national hero, Cde Herbert Chitepo, who was also a lawyer from the Zapu side as he was the party’s legal consultant during the liberation struggle where he represented Chief Vezi Maduna of Insiza and Cde Dumiso Dabengwa.

Adv Senda and the late High Court judge, Washington Sansole then set up a law firm, the Sansole and Senda Legal Practioners which is still in existence but now run by a new breed of legal minds.

He is survived by three children, two daughters and a son as well as several grand children.
