CONSTRUCTION of the multi-million-dollar Museum of African Liberation in Liberation City, Warren Park, Harare, is progressing smoothly, with the Zimbabwe and Sadc exhibit sections almost complete.
With two of the three floors nearly complete, construction will soon shift to the final floor, while the finished sections will open to the public.
Speaking at a media tour on Wednesday, Institute of African Knowledge chief executive Ambassador Kwame Muzawazi said: “Today, I am very happy to announce that tremendous progress has been registered in the implementation of the project and the President has kept to his word, even much faster than his words,’ he said.
“As you can see today, there is the pouring of concrete on the second floor of three floors of the Museum of African Liberation. The Zimbabwe section is complete. The SADC section is getting completed and then we move on to the last floor, which will be more administrative and mechanical for the building of the museum. So the project has reached a very critical milestone,” he said.
Ambassador Muzawazi was also excited that the majority of African countries had endorsed the project.
“As you also know, His Excellency the President dispatched a special envoy, Ambassador Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, and he went and met 25 heads of state with an invitation from Zimbabwe, from the President to participate and all of them resoundingly were very responsive to the invitation.
“They have been sending their delegations. We are signing memorandums of understanding with some countries, and some have been allocated land to showcase their own history and struggles for self-determination in Africa”.
He also welcomed the influx of artefacts from across the continent and looked forward to receiving more contributions from the public.
“Artefacts are increasingly coming in, and we are grateful for them. We are always looking for more, and any additional artefacts for our exhibits are welcome. We will be opening the Zimbabwean and SADC sections within the next nine to 12 months for public visits. And I think that it is a fair timeframe to be able to expect that to happen”.
The Museum of African Liberation is situated on a 103ha site known as Liberation City.
This large area is 7km west of Harare city centre, along the busy Samora Machel Avenue, aptly named after Mozambique’s founding father.
It will house the museum as the main attraction and will include a five-star hotel, an amusement park, a theme park, an animal park, and national monuments including a heritage village among many recreational and amusement facilities.
The Liberation City is projected to be a family-friendly attraction for local, regional and international tourists who will enjoy history, heritage, recreational, commercial and amusement facilities.
