VISITING military commanders from Burundi, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania yesterday toured the Liberation City housing the Museum of African Liberation and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Heritage Monument in Harare to assess progress on the ongoing projects.
The joint African military delegation was led by Brigadier-General Nibayubahe Nestor, who is the Commandant at Senior and Staff College in Burundi.
A representative from each nation watered a tree on behalf of their country at the Liberation City.
Speaking after the tour, Institute of African Knowledge chief executive Ambassador Kwame Muzawazi said it was an honour to receive the delegation of military leaders.
“They are here with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to see the development of our force’s Memorial Park and other facilities within the Liberation City such as the Museum of African Liberation.
“As you know, this is a development primarily to give reverence to our victorious military history as Africa, and therefore this visit has been very important in deepening the cultural understanding of aspects of our history,” he said.
“We always say, when you see a soldier, you should think of peace not war. Today, the generals told us to think of life itself by watering trees which we appreciate so much”.
The Museum of African Liberation is situated on a 103-hectare site known as Liberation City, whose construction has already commenced.
Liberation City is an expansive piece of land located seven kilometres west of Harare city centre, along the busy Samora Machel Avenue, aptly named after Mozambique’s founding father.
It will house the museum as the main attraction and will include a five-star hotel, an amusement park, theme park, animal park, various national monuments including a heritage village among many recreational and amusement facilities.
The Liberation City is projected to be a family friendly attraction for both local, regional and international tourists who will enjoy history, heritage, recreational, commercial and amusement facilities to be established at the new city.
