SHE is 68 but, for the celebrated Queen off Soukous, age is nothing but just a number.
Congolese dance sensation, Yondo Sister, marked FIFTY years in the musical business last year.
She has come a long way since her debut appearance on stage in 1975.
But, even in the 51st year of her musical career, the 68-year-old is not holding back.
She is even promising fireworks on stage when she takes part at the Ecobank Legends Night show in Harare tomorrow. She says she is delighted to be back in the country and cannot wait to showcase her energetic dance moves to local fans at Alex Sports Club.Yondo Sister arrived in Harare yesterday ahead of the star-studded show where she will share the stage with Malian music legend, Salif Keita, and a strong line-up of local performers.
Speaking shortly after her arrival, the celebrated performer said she was excited to return to Zimbabwe and was looking forward to connecting with audiences through music and dance.
“I am very happy to be in Zimbabwe. I am excited and I cannot wait to showcase my dance moves and give the people a performance they will remember,” she said.
Yondo Sister, who has built a reputation as an energetic performer with a distinctive dance style, said her experience with Zimbabwean audiences had always been positive.
“Zimbabwean people are lovely and very supportive. The love and energy I receive whenever I am here is amazing.
“I am really looking forward to Saturday.”
She said she was also eager to meet fellow performers and to be part of an event that brings together established African musicians and local talent.
“I am looking forward to the whole experience — meeting the other artists, getting on stage and celebrating music with the people of Zimbabwe. We are coming to have fun and create memories together.
“I just want everyone to come, enjoy themselves, dance with us and celebrate. I am happy to be here and I am ready to give Zimbabwe my best,” she said.
Her arrival will boost the excitement levels ahead of the Ecobank Legends Night, which organisers have described as a celebration of African musical heritage and contemporary entertainment.
The event is being hosted by Intotal Band, with the show bringing together internationally-recognised performers and Zimbabwean musicians for a night designed to celebrate live music.
Headlining the international contingent is Salif Keita, one of Africa’s most respected musicians, who arrived in Harare earlier this week.
The Malian legend says he is happy to be back in Zimbabwe, where he last performed in 2015 at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA).
Salif Keita is expected to headline the concert.
The show will also feature performances from Intotal Band and other local acts, creating a programme that seeks to blend Zimbabwean sounds with music and performance traditions from across the continent.
With both international headline acts now in the country, attention has shifted to Saturday afternoon when Alex Sports Club will become the meeting point for fans and their legends.
The organisers are expecting the concert to provide a platform where different generations and musical cultures can meet.
The presence of Salif Keita offers a rare opportunity for local music fans to witness one of Africa’s enduring musical figures performing alongside contemporary performers.
