‘Agric sustainability drives national development’

A stronger focus on food sustainability could unlock greater Government funding for key development initiatives, including infrastructure and social services, Zanu PF Chief Whip Cde Pupurai Togarepi said.

Cde Togarepi called upon legislators to lead Government efforts in promoting sustainable agricultural practices within their communities, particularly in the face of climate change.

Speaking at a field day event in Mudzi West Constituency last Saturday, Cde Togarepi challenged fellow parliamentarians to prioritise food sustainability as a tool for driving national development.

At least 90 top-performing farmers from Mudzi West’s administrative wards were awarded prizes at the vibrant event, which echoed the Government’s development mantra: “Leaving no one and no place behind.”

“Let’s continue supporting our MPs in boosting food security at the local level. That way, the Government can channel more funding into critical infrastructure, social programmes, and other essential projects that enhance national resilience against climate disasters,” said Chief Whip.

Cde Togarepi urged MPs to collaborate closely with their communities, encouraging effective use of available resources to support national goals.

“As representatives of the people, we must complement the Government. If we work with our communities and promote resource efficiency, we will see development across all constituencies,” he said.

Cde Togarepi applauded Mudzi West legislator Knowledge Kaitano for leading by example and promoting food production efforts in his constituency.

“I am proud of what Honourable Kaitano is doing. He’s active in Parliament and also making a real impact on the ground. I will take this initiative to Parliament and encourage all MPs to replicate it nationwide.”

Cde Togarepi also commended MP Kaitano for his dedication both in Parliament and in his community.

“He’s one of our most active MPs. What he’s doing here shows he’s aligned with the President’s vision of development. He’s inspiring productivity among his people, and that’s exciting to see,” he said.

“I wish I could replicate some of these initiatives in Gutu South. The agricultural produce I have seen here is impressive. Just three sorghum cobs weigh a full kilogramme, that’s remarkable.

“With continued government support, communities like this can significantly strengthen the country’s food security.”

MP Kaitano said he is committed to supporting farmers in adopting traditional grain production to combat the effects of climate change.

“With climate change now a reality, we must work together to promote the cultivation of traditional grains to ensure household food security in our constituency,” he said.

MP Kaitano also praised the Government for its continued support through seasonal input distribution and other agricultural programs aligned with President Mnangagwa’s vision of achieving an upper-middle-income economy by 2030. Mudzi District, located in natural Region IV, is characterised by a semi-arid climate, low rainfall, and frequent droughts, making it a challenging environment for traditional farming.

However, the area is suitable for drought-resistant crops such as sorghum, pearl millet, and groundnuts. The field day, held at Chifamba Secondary School, attracted Government, Zanu PF officials, agencies, and major seed producers, including Seed-Co and Agri-Seeds.
