Agyemang sets ambitious DeMbare target

AFTER making a false start in his debut season at Harare giants Dynamos in 2025, Ghanaian forward Frank Agyemang has every reason to believe this season could turn out brilliant for him and the club.

Ahead of tomorrow’s clash with FC Platinum at Rufaro, he told Zimpapers Sports Hub that he has laid down ambitious individual targets, to help drive the Glamour Boys’ revival mission this year.

Unlike last season when he struggled to make his case with a barren spell, Agyemang has so far scored three goals in DeMbare’s opening six games of the 2026 campaign.

The 22-year-old last week scored a potential contender of the goal of the season in the 1-0 win at Simba Bhora, the first time Dynamos beat the 2024 champions at their Wadzanai fortress.

Agyemang, however, maintained he was not getting ahead of himself ahead of the clash with FC Platinum.

“FC Platinum is a good side,” he said.

“They are a team that likes playing around with the ball. We know them already and we are preparing. Obviously with the spirit that I am seeing at training and in our previous matches I think we have good chances of winning the game.”

The Ghanaian opened his Dynamos account in the 2-1 win against TelOne on a rain-soaked pitch at Ascot last month.

He followed that up with a late strike against Bulawayo Chiefs to ensure a 2-0 win for the Glamour Boys.

But it was in Shamva last Sunday that he left the DeMbare fans in awe with a wonder goal scored from his own half after spotting giant Simba Bhora goalkeeper William Thole off his line and then launching a long-range volley.

“First of all, I give thanks to God. It’s been God since day one and my teammates here have been helping me,” he said.

“The coach (Genesis Mangombe) has always been encouraging me to do more. Even if I am starting from the bench, I have always grabbed the opportunities to play positively.

“I am expecting more this season. The fans should expect more too. I cannot say I will get the Golden Boot, but I believe in myself. If I get it, I will not be shocked. I have to continue working hard.”

Agyemang is also feeling more at home since the arrival of compatriot Christopher Netty, who has fitted in seamlessly into the right back position left vacant by former skipper Emmanuel Jalai when he moved to Durban City in South Africa.

“Christopher Netty is a very good player who once played in the Ghanian Premier League as well as the local Black Stars.

“We use our local language when I am playing with him on the right wing and it becomes simpler for me to adapt,” said Agyemang.

Dynamos have been potent in front of goal this season, scoring at least a goal in every match.

Chief marksman Jairos Kasondo is among the league’s early leading scorers with four goals to his name.

Coach Genesis Mangombe is happy with his squad and has a good bill of health ahead of tomorrow’s match with only Cameroonian goalkeeper Iddrisou Nfor Finia and ex-Yadah forward Prosper Kafelapanjila still in the casualty ward.

Mangombe is looking forward to the Dynamos supporters playing a key role by rallying behind the team tomorrow.

“At the moment, we are very happy and they (supporters) are really playing a pivotal role, a very big role in attaining the results because at the end of the day, that cheering is very important to our players.

“And also, we encourage them to also come in their numbers on Sunday. Maybe they also need to understand that some of the new boys haven’t gelled in very well, so they need to be patient with them.

“But I know because at training, they are doing extremely well. So, it’s only a matter of time that they will adjust to the crowd, and to the demands of Dynamos as well,” said Mangombe.

Dynamos and FC Platinum always engage in close contests although the platinum miners enjoy a slight advantage in head-to-head records. Dynamos have won eight times against the Platinum miners, who boast of 10 wins over the Glamour Boys.

FC Platinum coach Joel Luphahla, who had a brief stint in the DeMbare technical team is not new to the expectations at Rufaro, especially facing a Dynamos side yet to taste defeat this season.

“I think we have a massive game in our hands. When Dynamos are playing well, you know that they are going to fill up Rufaro,” Luphahla said.

“I think these are the kind of games that we should be playing as a footballer and also as a coach. These are the atmospheres that you want to prevail in, but it makes it a difficult game because they have lost a game.”

Dynamos have four wins and two draws in their opening six matches while FC Platinum have experienced largely mixed fortunes, with a run comprising two wins, three draws and a loss.

This leaves them on sixth position with nine points, while DeMbare are second with 14 points and one behind early pace-setters CAPS United.

Luphahla challenged his men to raise their hands up tomorrow.

“On Sunday, we need men. We need men to represent FC Platinum. We don’t need boys, we need men because that game is a game and a half. These are the games that, as players, you want to play. They change lives.

“I know that the national selectors will be there watching. So, for our boys, it is an opportunity.

“It is not pressure that we are putting on them, but it is an opportunity for them to go out there and showcase what they can do and make sure that maybe on the next national team selection, instead of having only one player, we can have two or three players representing the country,” said Luphahla.

Action starts this afternoon at Rufaro with CAPS United seeking to extend their lead at the top with a clash against Nesbert “Yabo’’ Saruchera’s debutants FC Hunters who eyeing their first Premiership win.

Basement side Aagam are also in search of a maiden PSL win as they head to unbeaten fellow newboys Hardrock at Chahwanda in Kwekwe.

 Fixtures:

Today: FC Hunters v CAPS Utd (Rufaro), Hardrock v AGAMA (Chahwanda), Ngezi Platinum Stars v Triangle (Baobab), TelOne v Chicken Inn (Ascot), Bulawayo Chiefs v Scottland (Barbourfields)

Tomorrow: Highlanders v ZPC Kariba (Barbourfields), Dynamos v FC Platinum (Rufaro), Manica Diamonds v Herentals (GreenFuel Arena)

Monday: MWOS v Simba Bhora (Ngoni).
