Jaco Ahlers took a one-shot lead on the first day of the FBC Zimbabwe Golf Open after a late charge to finish four under at Royal Harare Golf Club.
The South African sank a birdie on the 10th and then managed two more at the par-three 11th and the par-five 12th and closing the round with a par-four birdie on the 17th and even for par on the par-four 18th sign for a round of 65, which included two other birdies and an eagle.
In second place after the first round, another South African, Micheal Hollick shot a round of 66 while Zimbabwean favourite, Zimbabwean Scott Vincent who leads home hopes finished the day tied for third after shooting 66.
Vincent fired a first round 5-under score 67. His round included six birdies but missed out on an outright 1st round lead when he bogied the par-4 18th hole.
Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinoi also leads home hopes at the Royal at two under and tied for 26th. His opening round included five birdies, another Zimbo, Kieran Vincent closed the round on 71.
The younger Vincent seemed heading into trouble winds after bogeys on the 5th and 9th but recovered to birdie the 11th and the 16th holes.
South African professional golfer, Neil Schietekat knows more than anyone how much can change in a year.
Around this time last year, Schietekat walked around the Royal Harare Golf Club with a smile from cheek to cheek, posing for pictures.
On Thursday, Schietekat was back for the 2024 event, but his game wasn’t. He’s tied for 78th out of 144 total participants at 2-over par and nine shots off the lead.
Schietekat finished 11-under par last year, winning his first FBC Zimbabwe Golf Open title.
