GATEWAY Christian Teachers College has launched a pioneering initiative, Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Teachers in Africa, aimed at integrating AI and digital literacy into education in line with the Government’s Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) agenda.
Officially launched on May 5, the programme positions the college among the first teacher training institutions to formally integrate artificial intelligence into teacher professional development as the country embraces technology.
In a statement, Gateway Christian Teachers College said: “The initiative aims to equip educators with the skills and mindset to harness the power of Al in the classroom.
“It aligns with Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 policy, which promotes innovation, industrialisation, and heritage-based learning.
“It also directly aligns with the government’s commitment to integrating Artificial Intelligence (Al) and digital literacy into its national development and education strategies, particularly in alignment with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).”
The training covers a wide range of topics, including Al fundamentals, classroom applications, and ethical considerations around data privacy.
The programme is also structured in phased components: beginning with capacity building, then moving into tool deployment, classroom adoption, and the formation of communities of practice to ensure continued learning and peer support.
The college is also targeting to train over 1 000 teachers this year.
“Thirteen educators participated in the inaugural cohort and were selected as Al champions who will spearhead further training efforts,” the school said.
“Each participant was equipped with resources to train peers within their schools, contributing to an ambitious goal of training 1 000 teachers by the end of 2025.”
The Al for Teachers also contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education (SDG 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).

As someone passionate about the future of education, I am truly encouraged by Gateway Christian Teachers College’s bold move to introduce the AI for Teachers in Africa programme. It’s heartening to see a teacher training institution taking such a forward-thinking approach—equipping educators not just with tools, but with the mindset needed for 21st-century teaching. This initiative has the potential to transform classrooms, empower teachers, and ultimately uplift learning outcomes across the continent. I applaud the vision and look forward to seeing its impact grow.
