THE Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ), Air Marshal Jacob Nzvede, has described the passing away of Air Commodore (Retired) Simon Brian Bere as a loss of a devoted cadre whose life was anchored in loyal service to the nation.
Air Commodore (Retd) Bere died on April 24 in Zambia, where he had been receiving medical treatment. He was 67.
In a statement, Air Marshal Nzvede said the AFZ and the nation at large had suffered a profound loss.
Air Marshal Nzvede extended condolences to the Bere and Kurwaisimba families, noting that the senior officer’s contribution to both the liberation struggle and post-independence military development would remain indelible.
Air Marshal Nzvede noted that Air Commodore (Retd) Bere’s leadership and commitment contributed significantly to the development of the country’s air defence systems and institutional ethos. Air Commodore (Retd) Bere was a distinguished liberation war veteran and senior figure in the country’s post-independence military establishment.
Born on September 19, 1959 in Hurungwe, he pursued his early education at Chiroti and Matau primary schools before attending Ascot for his secondary education.
Driven by the call to liberate his country, he joined the armed struggle. Throughout his military career, Air Commodore (Retd) Bere played a pivotal role in shaping the professionalism and operational strength of the AFZ. Air Commodore (Retd) Bere became known for his discipline, patriotism and unwavering loyalty to the nation, qualities that earned him respect within the military and beyond.
Mourners are gathered at Plot 6, Ansdale Farm, in Karoi.
