AS Government looks to get the country’s tourism sector fully functional again, Cabinet is now working on the modalities around the re-opening of the country’s airports, with domestic and international flights set to resume soon.
Tourism, a mainstay in the country’s economy, has been hard hit by Covid-19, with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority announcing in June that the country could lose as much as US$1 billion due to the global pandemic.
The country received between 2.2 and 2.6 million visitors from 2017 to 2019, but that is set to significantly decline with airlines grounded and international travel restricted.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, said after yesterday’s Cabinet meeting that Government was working out how best to reopen airports, with domestic flights set to to begin the process. She also noted that boat operations had also been approved.
“Government is finalizing on modalities for the re-opening of airports to support the resumption of the Tourism Sector. The plan is to start with the resumption of domestic flights and then move to international flights. Cabinet approved the resumption of the rest of tourism operations including boat operations,” Minister Mutsvangwa said.
