Airtel Africa has completed testing of data and messaging services using SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile technology in Kenya, marking a significant step towards rolling out satellite-to-mobile connectivity across 14 African markets.
The testing was conducted in areas with no terrestrial mobile network coverage, where 4G-compatible smartphones seamlessly connected to Starlink’s constellation of 650 satellites.
The trial demonstrated the successful performance of light-data applications, including WhatsApp calling and messaging, maps, Facebook Messenger, and financial transactions via the Airtel app.
Sunil Taldar, chief executive officer of Airtel Africa, said the testing phase represented a move from announcement to actionable steps with SpaceX.
“This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access,” Taldar said. “By integrating Starlink Mobile’s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network.”
Following the Kenya trial, Airtel Africa and Starlink Mobile plan to use the insights gained to expand the service across the company’s 14 markets, subject to country-specific regulatory approvals.
The partners also intend to launch voice calling and expanded data capabilities using Starlink Mobile V2 technology, which will enable broadband connectivity directly to mobile phones.
Airtel Africa operates in 14 countries across sub-Saharan Africa and provides telecommunications and mobile money services to 174 million customers.
Starlink Mobile, operated by SpaceX, maintains the world’s largest low-Earth orbit satellite constellation and partners with mobile network operators globally to provide connectivity in areas beyond terrestrial network reach.
