All eyes are set on Ajax Cape Town’s youngsters heading into today’s Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.Urban Warriors boast some of the country’s most promising talents in Riyaad Norodien, Abbubaker Mobara, Rivaldo Coetzee, Bantu Mzwakali and Tashreeq Morris.
Norodien, Morris and Mzwakali are nominated for Young Player of the Tournament and the trio are again expected to shine as the Urban Warriors look to upset their more illustrious opponents.
Roger de Sa’s troops booked their place in the showpiece with wins over Mainstay United (9-1 away — the biggest winning margin in the competition this year), Bloemfontein Celtic (1-0 home), Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United (both 2-1 at home).
Midfielder Granwald Scott is in confident mood heading into this weekend’s clash and believes the Cape outfit have the required mental strength to beat the Brazilians and lift the coveted title.
“I want to win this, I’m so positive that we can get a good result. Everyone has worked so hard. We have been unlucky as a club for the last few seasons. This season no one gave us a chance and look where we ended. So I think all the odds are there for us,” Scott said,
“The last few weeks we have got winning goals in stoppage time, and that’s motivation itself.
“Half time 2-0 down against Bloemfontein Celtic, the youngsters, their heads were down, and I kept on telling them, there are two halves of 45 minutes, you have to just push through the pain on the field, because they are 11, and we are 11, they are also human — let’s give our everything and see what happens.” — Sport24
