TWO armed robbers, brandishing AK-47 guns, allegedly attacked three illegal forex dealers (osiphatheleni) and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash at Nkulumane Shopping Complex in Bulawayo on Thursday morning.
The robbery happened in full view of unassuming shoppers who were going about their business at around 10am.
One of the victims, only identified as Tina, said the robbers casually walked up to her carrying assault weapons, and at first she thought they were police officers.
“They were wearing what looked like police uniforms so I wasn’t worried that they were carrying guns until one of them snatched my bag and demanded that I hand over money.
Fortunately, the bag that he snatched had no money. Two of my colleagues then ran away and the two men walked away. I could not see their faces clearly as they were wearing masks,” said Tina.
The robbers are said to have attacked another money changer known as Mabhena and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
A third woman was attacked and she ran into a nearby butchery but also lost cash. The attackers reportedly walked away casually in a white getaway car that was parked behind the complex.
A report was made at a police base situated at the shopping complex. A vendor who asked not to be named said he no longer feels safe after the daylight robbery.
“We are no longer feel safe working here. It is scary that two men can walk around carrying big guns in broad daylight and rob people,” said the vendor.
Earlier this week, a driver working for a local primary school is said to have lost a Honda Fit vehicle after he was attacked by a group of men who threatened him with guns. Police could not immediately comment on the cases.
