Algiers. – Algerian incumbent President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has said he will amend the constitution if he is elected for a fourth term in the upcoming elections, local media reported yesterday.“If the Algerian people renew their confidence on me, I pledge to work with all representatives of different tendencies of the society to create suitable political and institutional conditions ahead of building a model of governance responsive to the aspirations of our people,” Bouteflika was quoted as saying by state-run radio.
“This would be reached through reviewing the constitution within the current year,” he said.
Bouteflika (77) announced on March 13 his official candidacy for presidential elections on April 17, “at the request of political parties and civil society associations”.
He suffered a minor stroke in April 2013, and was hospitalised for a couple of months in France.
His candidacy sparked controversy in the North African country. His opponents said he was incapable of ruling the nation, and urged him to. — Xinhua.
