All about Tawanda Chirewa, Warriors man of the moment

Born on 12 October 2003, Tawanda Chirewa is a 20-year-old football talent of English and Zimbabwean descent. He made his debut for Zimbabwe Warriors in a 2-0 loss to Lesotho last Friday and scored his first goal in national team colours when Zimbabwe lost 3-1 to South Africa on Tuesday.

Both matches were qualifiers for the Fifa 2026 World Cup and were played in South Africa.

Chirewa, born in England, displayed early promise in football, leading him to join the Ipswich Town Academy. His journey in the sport took a significant turn when he joined the Wolves Academy (England) in September 2023, signing a long-term deal after flourishing with the Ipswich Town Academy.

Chirewa’s football prowess became evident as he consistently impressed with the Wolves Under 21 side, scoring goals and showcasing skills that caught the attention of Wolves boss Gary O’Neil. This earned him an invitation to train with the first team, where O’Neil expressed satisfaction with Chirewa’s progress and integration into senior training sessions.

His move from Ipswich Town to Wolves marked a new chapter in his career, providing him with opportunities to contribute to the first team.

In October 2023, Chirewa marked a milestone in his career by scoring his first goal for Wolves in a 2-0 victory over Leeds Under 21 in the Premier League 2. This accomplishment reflected his growing impact on the pitch and added to the excitement surrounding his potential breakthrough into the senior team.

Chirewa found himself at the centre of a training ground altercation with senior team defender Jonny Otto in December 2023. The incident, reported by The Athletic, described an exchange where Otto reacted aggressively towards Chirewa after a challenge, leading to Otto’s ban from training and subsequent exclusion from the team. The clash highlighted the intensity and competition within the Wolves training environment.

Information about Chirewa’s personal life is limited, with the focus primarily on his football career. As of the latest available details, he remains dedicated to his professional development within the Wolves setup.

He made his senior debut for Ipswich at the age of 16 years and 31 days old in November 2019. The then 19-year-old midfielder caught the attention of Wolves’ Academy manager, Jon Hunter-Barrett, who emphasised Chirewa’s qualities, including his ball-handling skills and ability to contribute from deep areas.
