ALL is set for the highly anticipated second edition of the CABS Candidates Chess Tournament which runs at Gifford High School in Bulawayo from tomorrow until Tuesday.
The Candidates is one of the most prestigious events on the Zimbabwe Chess Federation annual calendar and will see over 150 players taking part.
Players from the host city, Bulawayo, have vowed to defend their base and pride as the likes of Tarsisio Chikandi, Prince Chidembo, and Charlene Mguni have already confirmed their availability.
CABS Holdings is the title sponsor after they went into a partnership with Zimbabwe Chess Federation.
ZCF secretary general, Todd Mapingire, expressed his excitement, stating that the tournament is one of the major tournament on the local calendar.
“The CABS Candidates chess tournament is one of the key national chess competitions on the ZCF Calendar which is FIDE Rated. We are thrilled to witness the convergence of Zimbabwe’s finest chess players in this highly competitive environment.
“We are grateful to CABS Holdings for their unwavering support, which has allowed us to elevate the sport of chess in the country.
“The event promises to be an exhilarating showcase of chess talent among local chess players to choose ‘candidates’ for the Zimbabwe National Chess Championships,” said Mapingire. Tournament coordinator Jarmil Ndoro said the tournament has gained a lot of attention from stakeholders and players at large.
“The CABS Candidates Chess Tournament has garnered significant attention from chess enthusiasts across Zimbabwe.
“We already have over 100 participants registered for the competition and it will be a thrilling battle between local chess masters and chess amateurs alike. “The tournament will feature three categories the Open Section, Ladies Section, and Development (juniors Under-16) categories,’ said Ndoro.
