All is set for Friday’s Chivi Zim-Asset conference aimed at taking stock of the progress made in the implementation of various projects across the district in line with the national economic blueprint. More than 3 000 delegates, including high-ranking Government officials, captains of industry and others from South Africa, Botswana and England, are expected to attend the conference at Chivi Growth Point. From the conference, 20 000 bags of maize meal and cement are expected to be realised with maize helping the communities in alleviating the El Nino-induced drought, while cement will be used to construct catchment areas for irrigation projects.
Addressing the media at his offices yesterday, Chivi Rural District Council chairperson Dr Killer Zivhu said preparations for the conference had reached an advanced stage.
Dr Zivhu, who is known for his philanthropic work, said the conference is aimed at demystifying Zim-Asset as well as raising funds for the community’s projects.
“We are going to hold the Chivi Zim-Asset feedback conference where councillors, legislators and senators, will be present at the meeting. We have 32 wards and each ward will be represented by 100 people. The conference is a feedback of what we have achieved as a district in line with Zim-Asset,” he said.
“Senators, councillors and legislators will be accorded a platform to respond to people’s problems and inform them about the Zim-Asset projects which they spearheaded after being elected into office.”
Dr Zivhu, who is also the Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association (Zaha) director-general, urged politicians, especially councillors, to shun factional politics and concentrate on developing their constituencies.
“Our mandate is to deliver to the electorate regardless of our political affiliation,” he said.
“Elected leaders should be transparent and accountable to the people. Zim-Asset is a good programme, but several politicians have pulled it down by concentrating on petty issues. As a district, we will discuss challenges and come up with solutions.”
Other issues to be discussed at the conference include ways in which the community could benefit from Tokwe-Mukosi, the dualisation of the Harare-Beitbridge Road and farm ownership.
Dr Zivhu recently launched a nationwide campaign dubbed Zimba365 aimed at inculcating patriotism among Zimbabweans.
