STUDENTS will today trade their books and pens for sporting regalia when they take part in this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutes Sports Union Games in Gweru.
The ZTISU Games will involve the top teams from the countries’ universities, teachers’ colleges and polytechnics and the highlight of the event will be the selection of a national team for the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Associations Games set for Zambia in August.
Tsitsi Kufa, the ZTISU marketing officer yesterday said the games will roar into life this morning with the athletics competitions. She said Gweru would be the main centre for the events with some of the disciplines spilling to Kwekwe and Bulawayo.
“We are having our ZTISU Games from June 26 to June 29. The games will start with athletics on June 26 at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo.
“We are using the tartan track at NUST so that we prepare the athletes for the regional games in Zambia in August where 10 other countries will also take part,” Kufa said.
The top two teams from the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Union, the Zimbabwe Teachers Colleges Sports Association and the Technical Education Sports Association of Zimbabwe will fight for honours.
Last weekend ZUSA held their games in Gweru after receiving US$50 000 from Old Mutual while the trainee teachers held their competitions in May after the technical colleges had led the way in April.
