ALL is set for this year’s Danhiko Annual Paralympic Games silver jubilee starting this Friday.
The Games, which cater for people living with disabilities, will see athletes from across the country competing in football, swimming, slalom, wheelchair basketball, track and field events, netball and tennis.
This year’s Games are running under the theme “Celebrating 25 Years of Paralympic Excellency” and 120 teams are expected to participate.
Deputy director and chairperson of the Games’ organising committee, Godfrey Majonga, said this year’s event will be a competition with a difference as they celebrate 25 years of competition.
“This is a very special competition as we are celebrating 25 years of the Danhiko Paralympic Games. We are expecting a lot of excitement from the participants and an exciting experience for the athletes.
“Each team would want to be remembered as the team that won the silver jubilee edition.
“Some of the things that are exciting are that we now have tennis courts, as you know in the past we used to rely on others in the neighbourhood for venues but this year we will be using our own courts,” said Majonga.
Majonga said they were happy they had already received donations for this year’s Games including the tennis courts from the Japanese Embassy.
“We have tennis courts that were donated to us by the Japanese embassy.
“So far we have 120 teams that have confirmed they are coming. Unfortunately we have sent invitations to foreign teams but none has confirmed so far but some times we have one or two teams turning up on the day of competition,” said Majonga.
The Games will be officially opened by First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe who is the Patron of the Danhiko Annual Paralympic Games and Danhiko Project.
The Games were last year extended to cover four days.
Copota School for the Blind from Masvingo are the defending champions after they emerged winners in last year’s competition.
