ALL is set for the commencement of the Premier Handball League in the Southern Region this weekend at Northlea High School with 14 men and women’s teams expected to participate. The Zimbabwe Handball Premier League was introduced this year and provinces were divided into two regions, Southern and Northern.

The Northern Region got underway last weekend at Houghton Park in Harare.

Tomorrow all the action will be in Bulawayo when they host the first matches for the Southern Region.
They will be joined by Matabeleland North, Masvingo, Midlands and Matabeleland South.

ZPHL fixtures secretary Bernard Muzanenhamo said teams that have confirmed their participation include Daramombe from Masvingo, Hwange Colliery, Midlands State University, National University of Science and Technology, Black Panthers, JZ Moyo and Bulawayo Stars.

“Other teams have not yet confirmed but for those that have confirmed have both men and women teams,” said Muzanenhamo.
Zimbabwe Handball Federation secretary-general Alphios Magiya said they were hoping to see some good competition from seasoned clubs such as JZ Moyo, Black Panthers and Daramombe.

“The league for the Southern Region will be at Northlea High School on Saturday. We are expecting teams to participate as much as the Northern Region has done because this is the first of its kind and clubs are excited.

“We will try to see how they will do against the level of competition which we saw last week. We have had very active clubs (in the Southern Region) such as Ajax who are the defending champions for the President’s Trophy and were second in the National Open championships and Black Panthers.

“We also have Daramombe from Masvingo, they are very competitive and are the champions for the National Open championships in the women’s section,” said Magiya.
