ALL is set for the 38th Independence anniversary celebrations in Masvingo with the main celebrations slated for Mucheke Stadium tomorrow.
More than $7 000 in cash and various other donations have been mobilised for the event.
Provincial Administrator, Mr Fungai Mbetsa, who is also chairman of the State Occasions Committee yesterday said preparations for this year’s celebrations were complete with only minor touches still to be done on decorating the venue.
He hailed Government stakeholders, individuals and other private companies for donating towards the hosting of the event and urged people from all walks of life to attend, irrespective of one’s political persuasion.
Mr Mbetsa said this year’s celebration, the first to be held without former president Mr Robert Mugabe, will be unique, as it came against the backdrop of a new dispensation led by President Mnangagwa, who has always preached peace and unity in the country.
“We are ready for the Independence celebrations. We have mobilised at least $7 000 from our all-weather friends. We are only left with a few touch-ups on decorating the stadium,” said Mr Mbetsa.
“We urge all people in Masvingo, including all political parties, to attend the celebrations at Mucheke.
“This is a national event, which does not segregate people basing on anything — may it be politics, religion, colour or creed,” he said.
The celebrations will also see winners of this year’s Miss Independence Provincial pageant being presented to Senator Hungwe.
“We should celebrate this day together, to mark the day we were liberated from colonial bondage, as a people,” he said.
Mr Mbetsa assured the people of Masvingo that there is enough food for those who will attend the celebrations and thanked the local business community and ordinary people for donating in cash and kind towards the Independence festivities.
He also said the security forces, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Zimbabwe National Army and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services will provide the main entertainment such as their exhilarating slow and quick march drills,
Senator Hungwe is expected to read President Mnangagwa’s keynote speech.
