AS Zimbabwe marks Independence Day, the city of Kwekwe will host a major chess milestone: the JR Mawere U1900 FIDE Rated Chess Tournament.

The tournament runs from April 17 to April 19.

It is held in honour of the late Johnstone Rex Mawere, a former Kwekwe mayor and town clerk.

Kwekwe Primary School will serve as the venue.

Considered one of the most important chess tournaments on the local calendar, the event will feature players with a FIDE rating which is below 1900.

Blessing Motshabi, a prominent player from Botswana, is among the foreign players that have registered to take part in this event.

Among the prominent local players that are expected to compete in the ladies section are Tanaka Matipa and Grace Nyamungure.

Grace Zvarebwa and Amos Blessing, two experienced players who boast Zimbabwe Nationals experience, are also expected to be in the line-up.

The tournament will include a development section for players under the age of 14.

Itai Madicha, the chief organiser of the tournament, highlighted the importance of the tournament.

“This tournament holds deep emotional and cultural significance for the Mawere family, as it keeps the memory and contributions of JR Mawere alive.”

“It is a way of honouring his legacy by investing in the youth and the future of the community,” Madicha said.

Madicha added:

“For the people of Kwekwe, the tournament is a source of pride. It brings people together, promotes local talent, and places the city on the national chess map.”

“It also contributes to community engagement and inspires young people to pursue excellence in chess and in life.”

Moses Shumba, the tournament’s chief arbiter said preparations are at an advanced stage.

“We have successfully secured the venue, confirmed participation from players across different regions, and finalised key logistical arrangements, including arbiters, equipment, and accommodation.”

“Our team has put in place systems to ensure smooth co-ordination, fair play, and a memorable experience for all participants and spectators,” Shumba said.
