RAINBOW Netball League secretary-general Moses Gukurume says they are ready for their annual general meeting and 2023 awards ceremony all to be held in Harare on Saturday.
The AGM will take place in the morning before the awards ceremony at High Achievers Coach International Academy in Borrowdale.
“The AGM is set to address some of the challenges which we faced last season. Among those was the issue of travelling where some teams could not fulfil their fixtures. We are looking at tightening the screws as far as player registration is concerned too. “We have realised that players are migrating from team to team without proper authority from the governing Ranl board. So we are saying players should be registered with one team and hold one licence to play in one league. This will help us in making this league professional,” said Gukurume.
He said they want to make sure the game spreads to different parts of the country.
“We have teams from places such as Kariba and Gwanda who have shown interest in playing in our league. We are considering them on the basis that this helps us spread netball,” said Gukurume.
After the meeting which will take place in the morning focus will shift to the awards ceremony in the evening.
The season concluded in November with several thrilling matches from the 16 league teams. Ranl champions Glow Petroleum Queens, who retained the title for the third year running, will be walking away with a cash prize and silverware.
Their coach Perpetua Siyachitema is favourite for the Coach of the Year award.
Runners-up Correctional Queens are also guaranteed a cheque for their efforts throughout the season.
Bringing new flair to the glamorous event, Ranl also introduced a new category People’s Choice Award this year.
The semi-professional league’s main focus has always been the empowerment of the Girl Child and women through not just social interaction in sport but also through sport as an alternative livelihood for women through opportunities in netball.
