UPDATE :

Fidel Castro our hero: Minister Tawengwa

President of the Cuban National Assembly, Honourable Esteban Lazo Hernandez has laid a wreath at Fidel Castro Square which is along the road bearing the same name.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Charles Tawengwa said the Cuban delegation’s visit to Zimbabwe is a testament to the close relations that exist between Zimbabwe and Cuba.

Minister Tawengwa said the relations of brotherhood and collaboration were born in the period of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, leading to the attainment of independence in 1980.

“We recall with fond memories that, led by the revolutionary Commander-in-Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz, Cuba supported us by training our combatants and providing arms and other materials for that struggle,” he said.

“Speaking of revolutionaries, we took it upon ourselves to imprint those heroes who helped us achieve our liberation cause.

“Therefore, the Government of Zimbabwe in 2020 renamed this road, formerly Charter Road, as Fidel Castro Road.
“This is a gesture that we believe will remind future generations of the solid bond between Zimbabwe and Cuba.”
