THE stage is set for yet another entertaining Heroes Day event as the City of Kings and Queens will play host to the second edition of the Unforgettable Social Soccer Heroes Trophy tournament at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds.
The two-day event will see 16 social clubs celebrate Heroes Day in style.
The much anticipated tournament is scheduled for Sunday August 11 to Monday August 12 with teams coming from as far as Harare, Gweru and Zvishavane.
It will present the perfect holiday for football enthusiasts in the city.
This year’s edition of the tournament is set to focus on promoting social interaction and to that end, the organisers said they are hoping that everyone will be able to build networks while also enjoying two days of fun and entertainment.
Tournament coordinator Melford Matarirano said the forthcoming event transcends the football pitch and will play a pivotal role in helping players socialise and network for the greater good.
Matarirano said he hopes that in the future, the tournament grows bigger and better.
“The main idea is to socialise and network with other social teams, coming together, having fun and also building those networks. Many of these teams are people who have played football before, some have never played but have love for the game so the main idea is to network and socialise, connecting everyone to come together.
“We are hoping to grow and have a bigger league, we have our own social leagues happening in the country, especially in Bulawayo. So we hope to see tournaments like this happening more often. We wish to see teams coming together, socialising, bringing in new ideas including even business ideas,” said Matarirano.
Last year’s tournament was won by Revolution FC and they will be returning to the fold this year with the hope of defending their title.
He added that it will be an action packed day with lots of entertainment and fun games taking place. He called on all football loving people to make way to Hartsfield for a great experience.
“Expect more fun, more socialising, more networking and it will be a tournament to watch. The main highlight is that last year’s winners, Revolution are coming through and we will see if they’re able to defend their tournament. We expect fireworks and fun and a great time.
“Expect full bar and catering, we are going to be having traditional foods and amazing new items from our menus, with braai as well. There’s going to be lots of fun and games,” he said.
Apart from the football, there will also be musical entertainment from local DJs.
A kids play center will also be established, making it a family fun day where all are welcome to celebrate their holidays in style.
Some of the teams to look out for include Galacticos FC, Northend Gumas, Blue Stars, Eastern Strikers, Madamburi (Harare), Village FC and many more.—@brandon_malvin
