STRICTLY Breaking is using hip-hop culture as a tool for youth empowerment, artistic development and community building.
Fungie Chana, a member of the Break Nation, has described Strictly Breaking as a cultural platform rooted in the original values of hip-hop —peace, unity, self-expression, creativity and knowledge.
“Strictly Breaking is more than a dance event, it is a platform dedicated to breaking (breakdancing), hip-hop culture, youth development, creative expression, and community building in Zimbabwe.
“At a time when many young people are looking for positive spaces to express themselves, connect, and develop their talents, Strictly Breaking creates an environment where dancers, DJs, artists, filmmakers, and cultural leaders can come together.
“It celebrates the original values of hip-hop culture: peace, unity, self-expression, knowledge and creativity.
“Breaking is now recognised globally, including through international competitions and major sporting platforms, which creates new opportunities for young Zimbabwean dancers.
“Strictly Breaking helps bridge the gap between local talent and global opportunities while preserving the authenticity of the culture.
“Zimbabwe is also experiencing growing interest in youth-led cultural events and creative economy initiatives that give young people ownership of their stories and artistic futures.”
Chana believes the platform serves as an important bridge between local talent and international opportunities.
This year’s edition will feature high-level breaking battles showcasing some of Zimbabwe’s most talented B-Boys and B-Girls, alongside emerging performers representing the next generation of the scene.
Set for today and tomorrow at Alliance Francaise, there will be a documentary screening exploring the history and impact of breaking culture.
There will be panel discussions focused on youth empowerment and the creative economy, as well as networking opportunities for artists and cultural practitioners.
A key feature of the event is the “Each One Teach One” philosophy, a mentorship-based approach that encourages experienced practitioners to share knowledge and skills with younger participants.
“One of the most exciting aspects of the event is seeing new talent step into the spotlight.
“Zimbabwe has many young dancers who may not always have access to major platforms, and Strictly Breaking is committed to giving them visibility and opportunities to grow.”
