THE Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) has given provinces the green light to hold boxing events, a month after suspending the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) leadership. Amateur boxing activities have been on hold countrywide, with ZBF affiliates saying they were waiting for a way forward from SRC following the suspension of its national executive for non-compliance.
Lovemore Maliyanga and his entire ZBF executive were slapped with two-year suspension last month together with board members of the Zimbabwe Handball Federation and the Wushu Federation.
The suspensions came after disciplinary hearings conducted by the SRC as a result of the two sports associations failing to submit audited financial statements and activity reports to the country’s supreme sporting body.
The Sports and Recreation Act compels all associations to submit audited financial returns as well as activity reports annually to the SRC. SRC communications manager Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said they were in the process of appointing an interim leadership for the affected associations.
“Activities don’t stop because of suspensions. The provinces should hold their events and if they need any assistance, they can contact SRC offices in their regions. We will announce names of their interim national leaders before the end of the week,” said Nheweyembwa.
Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (Baba) had suspended its monthly competitions awaiting a directive from the SRC.
Ezwell Ndlovu, the Baba vice-chairman said: “We are afraid to hold tournaments because we might face censure from the SRC, who suspended the national executive. Our fear is we don’t know who we report to. Not having events affects our preparations for the National Youth Games because the boxers can’t train without fighting.”
Ndlovu said they were planning to hold their first tournament of the year next month.
