Twenty-nine years after its formation at Ngwana Primary School, one of Zimbabwe’s most travelled music outfits, Amavevane Acapella, has reconnected with its roots by sending a representative to the school last week.

Formed in 1996 and formerly known as White Umfolosi, the group has proudly flown the Zimbabwean flag across the globe, performing for distinguished audiences that include the late former president Robert Mugabe and the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Interestingly, Amavevane Acapella began as a soccer team that, after a disappointing match loss, swapped the ball for the microphone and never looked back.

Frontman Future “Ndex” Moyo said the group sent a member to Ngwana Primary School in Bulilima District ,Matebeleland South , to conduct music lessons as a way of giving back to the school that first recognised their talent.
“The visit doubled as a fact-finding mission to see how best we can assist the school.

We held a two-day workshop for pupils and teachers, hoping to inspire new talent to emerge from the same institution that gave us a start,” said Ndex.

He added that feedback from the school revealed a pressing need for traditional instruments such as ingungu (drums), choir uniforms, and other music gear.

“This is something we are determined to address, but we also call on well-wishers to join us in supporting the school so that rural talent can thrive,” he said.

As part of their social responsibility, Amavevane Acapella also plans to roll out projects throughout the year, including providing stationery for underprivileged pupils. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
