FORMER Herald deputy editor and former Zimbabwean Ambassador to Brazil, Ambassador Thomas Bvuma has died.

His close friend, Zanu PF spokesperson Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa confirmed his death saying he just got a call he died this morning.

Amb Mutsvangwa highlighted that Amb Bvuma was a former student at St Augustine’s School, Tsambe, Penhalonga.

He joined Zanla in 1976 from the then University of Rhodesia where he was in his second-year degree studies.

He arrived at Doroi Refugee Camp in 1976.

He transferred to Chimoio Military Base for politico-military training. Thereafter, he was selected for further training at Chitepo Ideological College.

“President Mnangagwa head-hunted him to resume university studies, this time at Eduardo Mondlane University in 1977. The gathering and more confident pace of the Chimurenga II Struggle prompted the party leadership to consider post-victory manpower needs,” said Amb Mutsvangwa.

He stated that the Maputo University was one of the foreign institutions to positively and quickly to answer to this emergent need.

After Independence, he served as the President’s Chief Press Officer before moving to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

He was posted as Ambassador to Brazil as a diplomatic foot- soldier of the Anti-Sanctions drive to thwart and blunt the economic strangulation by the hostile West as it frantically fought the 2000 land reform.

The highlight of his diplomatic assignment, said Amb Mutsvangwa, was the More Food for Africa Project with Brazil.

“The supply of state-of-the-art equipment from farming powerhouse Brazil did a lot to break the back of the economic shackles.”

Vice Chairman of Zimbabwe Broadcast Corporation was his last public office assignment.

Amb Bvuma has the distinction of being one of the few published author of the Chimurenga II Armed Struggle.

Last year, the Institute of African Knowledge/Museum of African Liberation launched his book, “The Chosen Generation.”
