THE Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Ambassador Frederick Shava, has commended the United College of Education (UCE) for its strong focus on innovation, inclusivity and infrastructure development.
However, the Minister challenged the institution to urgently commercialise its projects to unlock value and contribute to national economic growth.
Addressing lecturers and staff on Thursday after touring ongoing projects, Ambassador Shava said UCE was positioning itself as a key player in transforming Zimbabwe’s education sector through its emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and specialist teacher training programmes.
He also praised the college’s drive to integrate digital technologies, including smart classrooms, e-learning platforms and digital literacy programmes.
“The college has demonstrated a forward-looking approach through infrastructure initiatives such as digital laboratories and content creation facilities, as well as a clear commitment to student and staff welfare, which is critical for a productive academic environment,” he said.
Ambassador Shava noted that such efforts are in line with Government’s thrust on industrialisation, innovation and modernisation of the education sector.
Despite the progress, he expressed concern that none of the institution’s projects were commercialised in 2025.
“It is noted with concern that no projects were commercialised in 2025. While plans are in place for 2026, this must be urgently addressed. Institutions of higher and tertiary education must move from knowledge generation to wealth creation,” he said.
He highlighted projects such as a recording studio, graphic design initiatives, assistive devices and sign language training as commendable, but stressed the need for them to move beyond the conceptual stage.
“I urge the college to accelerate the commercialisation of these projects and ensure they generate tangible income,” said Ambassador Shava.
The Minister also called for stronger collaboration between the college and industry to ensure that innovation is market-driven, while encouraging the establishment of innovation hubs for both students and staff.
