Congress of SA Trade Unions president Sidumo Dlamini assured the ANC that workers were behind the party. “As workers of this country it is clear in our minds that the ANC, come May 7, will continue to rule,” he told thousands of people at the stadium.
“To the opposition, we have seen your tricks.”
Dlamini said Cosatu would stand by the African National Congress the same way the ruling party stood by the trade union federation.
“We say thank you to the ANC.”
An ANC task team, led by deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, helped broker a ceasefire within Cosatu which was dealing with internal battles centred around its general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.
SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande yesterday told the ANC rally that his party had tirelessly campaigned for the ruling party.
The SACP along with Cosatu had concentrated its campaigning on workers.
“Workers have confidence in the ANC. They are assuring us they will not be fooled by those who want to turn trade unions into political parties,” Nzimande said.
He urged people to close ranks and go out and vote ANC on May 7.
ANC Youth League convenor Mzwandile Masina lambasted opposition parties.
He accused Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters of stealing the youth league’s idea of economic freedom.
Malema is the former ANC Youth League leader who was expelled from the party.
ANC Women’s League president Angie Motshekga said her league had travelled to all nine provinces to campaign for the ruling party.
“All our women are saying, we have full confidence in the ANC and the leadership of the ANC.”
The 95,000-seat FNB Stadium was filled to capacity yesterday.
President Jacob Zuma gave the key note address at the rally.
Earlier, he arrived dressed in a yellow T-shirt and leather ANC jacket, to loud cheers from party supporters.
The last time Zuma gave an address at the stadium, at the memorial of former president Nelson Mandela, he was booed.- Timeslive.
